WHAT IS HOME CARE?
Home care is where a home carer visits the client in his or her home offering support and encouragement.
In most instances the home carer is not a trained nurse, but rather a patient and loving person who has a heart to encourage and support those in need or distress.
The home carer will start out by sharing information on healthy eating and living, as well as encourage the client to join a support group and to be counseled as soon as possible.
For clients in the early stages of HIV (Stage 1 & 2), the home carer will assist with referrals to social services in order to obtain HIV Disability Grants and Child Support Grants for their children, as well as make referrals to psychiatrists and the likes if needed.
During Stages 3 & 4 of the HIV/Aids in many instances the client would require on-going support. The home carer would also recognize symptoms of TB, pneumonia or other opportunistic infections and make recommendations. In the instance of a client becoming bed-ridden, the home carer will support the client by assisting with bathing, brushing hair, cutting nails, feeding, massaging pressure areas and cleaning sores.
